An Ill-Matched Pair: Lucas Cranach the Elder

Lucas Cranach the Elder: An Ill-Matched Pair

German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder painted An Ill-Matched Pair around 1530. This subject was widely treated by artists such as Leonardo and Matsys. The theme of the marriage of (usually) an old man and a young woman for economic reasons is shown here by Cranach as a grotesque juxtaposition. The elderly grey-bearded man embraces his young wife while he looks at her adoringly. She, on the other hand, proudly looks out to us as if to signal the delight at her new social standing.

Lucas Cranach the Elder’s An Ill-Matched Pair is in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, Germany.
