British painter Charles Allston Collins became a friend of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood after meeting John Everett Millais during the 1840s. Collins quickly became influenced by their style and that is especially notable in The good harvest of 1854 which was exhibited at the Royal Academy a year after its completion in 1855. Here we see a small girl in a purple apron clutching a bushel of wheat, suggesting the bread that will be made from it. The Ivy in the background may be a symbol for wine.
