Portrait of General Claude Legrand: Antoine-Jean Gros

Antoine-Jean Gros: Portrait of General Claude Legrand

In 1810 French artist Antoine-Jean Gros painted a portrait of General Claude Legrand who was a distinguished general of Napoleon. He was a veteran leader of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and was to die of his wounds in 1815 at the River Berezina.

In Gros’s portrait here the general is shown full-length out near the front decorated in his awards. The character of the man – one of gentility, as the left hand holds his hat and sword informally – and the character of the soldier of his rank – one of authority – mingle together in Gros’s vision.

Antoine-Jean Gros’s Portrait of General Claude Legrand is in Palace of Versailles in France.
