Storks: Jósef Chelmonskí

Jósef Chelmonskí: Storks

Jósef Chelmonskí, who painted Storks in 1900, came to be associated with an artistic movement known as Polish Patriotic Painting, at a time when the Polish territories did not have independence. Here perhaps a father and son in peasant dress look to the sky to see a flock of storks flying overhead. There is a pitiful contrast between the hard and laborious life of the peasant and the complete freedom of the birds. Maybe this is a reference to the contemporary status of the Polish land and the hope for a self-sufficient future.

Jósef Chelmonskí’s’ Storks is in the National Museum in Warsaw, Poland.
