The Third Class Wagon: Honoré Daumier

Honoré Daumier: The Third Class Wagon

The Third Class Wagon once again shows Honoré Daumier’s social conscience, with concern for the packed, cramped conditions of travel for the French lower classes. In the centre a woman stares out with a look of resignation. This picture, also known as The Third Class Carriage, was painted between 1862 and 1864.

Honoré Daumier’s The Third Class Wagon is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
